This Holiday Season, YMCA of San Diego County is giving back to our community. The Y has organized a “Giving Tree” to benefit those in need within our own YFS family. Located in the lobby of YMCA of San Diego County Team Headquarters, the tree will hold detachable leaves with items specifically requested by Youth & Family Services participants. Each item will go towards a youth or family involved in YFS Transitional Living Programs or Counseling & Family Support Services.
One young gift recipient, Angela, is a resident at YFS’ Tommie’s Place Transitional Living Program. She has overcome complex family issues, homelessness and having children at a young age, but she hasn’t let these challenges stop her from achieving greatness. She recently received her High School diploma while single-handedly mothering a two year old, and pregnant with her second son, born August 2014.
Tommie’s Place has provided a home and a safe environment for Angela and her two young sons. The staff has assisted her with continuing her education and accessing resources within the community to help her overcome personal obstacles. Angela is currently in the process of enrolling in the YFS Urban Teacher Fellows Program for college students who want to become teachers. Her goal is to become a teacher and eventually manage her own daycare center.
The Giving Tree will provide Angela with clothing and toys to give to her boys for the Holidays. The tree will be up in the lobby of Team Headquarters (3708 Ruffin Road, San Diego 92123) starting in mid-November. Stop by to pick off a leaf and help your own YFS family!
